- On the initial approach to the youth hostel, I was
greeted by this musical trio who apparently perform here quite regularly!
Part of the youth hostel was still under construction, but despite the wet
concrete the place was very clean and sterile, Austrian fashion and
offered very good value bed and breakfast.
28.07.01 - Lots to explore.
Mozart Platz is the mostly densely touristed bit of the old town.
The
imposing Higher Salzburg Fortress offers striking views over the town...
...while
the Mirabell Gardens offer striking views of the Fortress!
Mozart would have seen a bit of the Collegiate
Church of the Immaculate Conception from a window of the house in which he was
born!

The
magnificent baroque cathedral, note the intricate interior decoration.
The
River Salzach seperating the old town from the new. ..
...and the Mozart family grave in the
church yard of St. Sebastian, alas without the great Amadeus himself who
was buried in an unmarked, pauper's grave!
 29.07.01
- A trip to the delightful baroque Hellbrunn Palace and Gardens. The tour of
the "Wasserspielen" (trick water gardens) meant the unobservant
people got a little damp. The jovial Archduke who had them built in the 17th
century would entertain his guests on the patio and they would get more than
they bargained for!.

[Note the jets of water spouting from the seats around the table. No
prizes for guessing where the Archduke would be seated]
More aquatic fun and games!
